Celebrity Golf Comes To Ireland This Summer

Two top events attract stars to two great golf destinations

Stars from the world of entertainment and sport teed off for a 27-hole match at the world famous K Club in County Kildare recently during the Firstlight Challenge Cup.

Hosted by fractional ownership specialists Firstlight International the tournament marked the sales launch of Firstlight’s luxury homes set in the grounds of the five star K Club Hotel. The resort is one of Ireland’s most prestigious golf and spa venues and lies in a spectacular 550-acre setting.

The K Club hosted the Ryder Cup in 2006.

Ronan Keating captained the entertainment team; his team mates included X Factor and TV personalities Ant and Dec, alongside actors Dougray Scott and James Nesbitt, ex-world snooker champ Dennis Taylor and legendary cricketer Ian Botham.

Heading up the opposing team was ex-footballer Alan Shearer. His team included some of the biggest names in football, past and present, such as Kevin Keegan, Steve Harper, David Platt, David Seaman, Dwight Yorke and Les Ferdinand.

Despite the competitive but good-humoured spirit of the tournament, the match eventually ended in a draw!

Meanwhile, the biggest golf star of them all, Tiger Woods, will be heading to Ireland soon for the July 5-6 J P McManus Invitational Pro-Am in County Limerick at the Adare Manor Hotel and Golf Resort. The previous tournament in 2005 raised over £25m for charity and Woods is looking forward helping raise funds.

“Like my own Foundation, I understand the importance and necessity of raising funds to help deserving individuals. This tournament does just that," Woods said.

Hollywood stars Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Douglas, Kyle MacLachlan, Hugh Grant and Ireland’s own homeboys Westlife will all be competing. Woods will be in good company - many of golf’s top names including Ireland’s own golf star Padraig Harrington will join him for the two-day event on the Emerald Isle. Lee Westwood, Jim Furyk, Ian Poulter, Ernie Els, Luke Donald, Paul Casey, Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer, Robert Allenby and Camilo Villegas are all confirmed to participate in the 36-hole pre-British Open competition.

The British Open kicks off at St. Andrews in Scotland on July 15th and this year it’s a significant one, marking the 150th British Open since the tournament began.
